Dental Crowns vs Veneers: Differences and Benefits

Dental crowns and dental veneers are teeth reconstruction dental procedures. They are meant to restore the size and shape of the teeth. Besides, they aid in regaining the strength and the physical appearance of the teeth including color. However, these two dental procedures have unique, distinct features from each other. Their usage is also entirely different.

Function and Design of Crowns and Veneers

Design and materials that make the dental crown and dental veneers are one such difference. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped ‘cap’ that is usually fitted over the infected tooth. When fully cemented, the crowns fully encase the part of the tooth that lies above the gum line. Dental crowns are mainly made of stainless steel, metal alloys such as gold, porcelain or resin.

On the other hand, dental veneers are wafer-thin custom-made dental shells to cover the facial surface of the infected tooth. They are mainly made of resin or porcelain.

Dental Crown Indications

The dental veneer is indicated in discolored, worn down, chipped or broken teeth. They are also shown in misaligned teeth, teeth with irregular shapes and teeth with gaps. It is only applicable in the frontal or facial side of the teeth. Thus, the lingual aspect of the teeth must have intact integrity.

Quite the opposite, the dental crowns are indicated in more carious teeth, cover dental implants, hold a dental bridge or cover misshaped or severely broken teeth.

Fixation Procedures

Similarly, the fixation procedures for these types of dental implantation differ significantly. Dental crowns require only two visits to the dentist. The first visit entails examining and preparing the tooth. A few x-rays may be taken to check the root and the jawbone of the tooth receiving the crown. Crown impressions and a scan plus a temporary crown are also prepared, the second visit entails removal of the temporary crown and fixation of the permanent crown.

The fixation of the dental veneer requires three visits to the dentist. The first visit involves diagnosis and planning of treatment. The second visit includes preparation of veneer fixation. Such may entail removal of some portions of enamel. The final visit is for bonding of the veneer with the tooth, which is achieved through cementing.

Durability

The fourth variation between the dental veneer and dental crown is their durability. The dental crowns are stronger and durable than the dental veneer. The crown can serve for between 12 to 25 years with minimal care and service.

However, they are prone to chipping off, falling off, breaking and discoloration, dental veneers serve for between four to eight years. Notably, they are not prone to cracking, chipping or falling off and they are permanent once fitted and do not require much maintenance.

Aesthetic Appearance

Dental veneers blend much better with adjacent natural teeth than dental crowns. Such is regarding color and the natural shiny feature of teeth. Dental crowns may not necessarily resemble the color of the adjacent natural teeth.
